چکیده

We analyze GPS data observed before and after the 2001 Mw 7.8 Kokoxili earthquake in northern Tibet to derive the coseismic deformation field of that earthquake. Using this coseismic displacement data set and geologically mapped surface break measurements, we invert for the coseismic slip distribution along the seismogenic East Kunlun fault. Our result shows that the earthquake on average ruptured from surface down to a depth of ~16.5 km (13.1~18.7 km at 70% confidence). The average slip is ~2.6 m left-lateral, with the maximum slip of ~5 m along the Kusai Lake segment of the fault. There is 2~3 m left-slip detected in a gap of measured surface rupture between the westernmost Sun Lake segment and the west end of the main rupture on the East Kunlun fault. We also determine 1.5~2.0 m left-slip along a segment beyond the east end of geologically mapped surface rupture. Vertical slip is insignificant (<< 1 m) along most part of the fault, it nevertheless shows a pattern of south side up west of and north side up east of 93E longitude respectively. The seismic moment release is estimated ~6.0×10 N.m, in good agreement with the seismological estimates.

Coseismic Deformation and Slip Distribution of the 1997 Mw7.5 Manyi, Tibet, Earthquake from InSAR Measurements

We use interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) observations to investigate the coseismic deformation and slip distribution of the 1997 Mw7.5 Manyi earthquake, a left-lateral strike-slip earthquake occurred on the west portion of the Kunlun fault in the northern Tibet, China. The fault trace is constrained by the combination of interferometric coherence image and azimuth offset image. T...

A Unilateral Rupture with Shallow Asperity and Rapid Afterslip

The Mw 6.1 South Napa earthquake occurred near Napa, California, on 24 August 2014 at 10:20:44.03 (UTC) and was the largest inland earthquake in northern California since the 1989 Mw 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake. The first report of the earthquake from the Northern California Earthquake Data Center (NCEDC) indicates a hypocentral depth of 11.0 km with longitude and latitude of (122.3105° W, 38.21...

Coseismic slip model of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake derived from joint inversion of interferometric synthetic aperture radar, GPS, and field data

[1] We derived a coseismic slip model for the Mw 7.9 2008 Wenchuan earthquake on the basis of radar line‐of‐sight displacements from ALOS interferograms, GPS vectors, and geological field data. Available interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data provided a nearly complete coverage of the surface deformation along both ascending (fine beam mode) and descending orbits (ScanSAR to Scan...

Coseismic and postseismic deformation of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake constrained by GRACE gravimetry

[1] Spaceborne gravimetry data from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) are processed using spatio-spectral Slepian localization analysis enabling the high-resolution detection of permanent gravity change associated with both coseismic and postseismic deformation resulting from the great 11 March 2011 Mw 9.0 TohokuOki earthquake. The GRACE observations are then used in a geophys...

Slip model of the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan (China) earthquake derived from co-seismic GPS data

Near-field co-seismic GPS data were used to derive the slip distribution of the 12 May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Based on field measurements and geological observations, the earthquake is represented by ruptures on the Beichuan fault and a neighboring fault from Pengxian to Guanxian, both dipping with a decreasing angle with depth. Using a layered elastic crust model, we obtained a slip model t...
